Hey Mamas!
So, it's that time of the year again – the season of sunshine, popsicles, and yes, summer camps! Now, I know what you're thinking – the mere thought of sending your precious munchkins off to a sleep away camp can tug at your heartstrings. But let me tell you, there's something truly magical about watching your little ones spread their wings and soar into the world of independence, fun, and lifelong memories.
First things first, let's talk about the golden question: When is the right time to send your kiddo off to camp? Well, every child is different, so there's no one-size-fits-all answer here. But generally, most kids are ready for the sleep away camp experience around ages 7-9. At this age, they've likely developed the necessary social skills and independence to thrive in a camp setting. Of course, you know your child best, so trust your instincts!
A few ways you can see if your child is ready for sleep away camp:
Can they stay a night at a friend or family member's house?
Are they able to do a a full day at a day camp?
Are they able to speak up and ask for things they need?
If you can answer yes to these things then - Yes they are ready for camp! If not practice. Let your kids stay a night with a trusted adult. Teach them to speak for themselves. We practice reading, writing and sports - why not practice getting ready for camp.
Now, onto the fun part – picking the perfect camp! With so many options out there, it can feel a bit overwhelming, but fear not, mama bear, I've got your back. Here are a few things to consider:
1. Camp Philosophy: Take a peek at the camp's mission and values. Do they align with yours? Whether you're all about fostering creativity, outdoor adventures, or personal growth, finding a camp with a philosophy that resonates with your family can make all the difference.
2. Activities Galore: From archery to arts and crafts, swimming to stargazing, camps offer a smorgasbord of activities to suit every interest. Sit down with your kiddo and brainstorm what activities they're most excited about. Bonus points if the camp offers a good balance of structured and free time!
3. Safety First: As mamas, our number one priority is keeping our little ones safe. When researching camps, be sure to inquire about their safety protocols, staff-to-camper ratios, and medical facilities. A camp that prioritizes safety and well-being will give you peace of mind while your kiddo is off having the time of their life. I only send my kids to American Camps Association Accredited camps. You can find the list of accredited camps at their website: https://find.acacamps.org/ there are literally thousands of camps to pick from.
4. Camp Culture: Every camp has its own unique vibe and culture. Some are more competitive, while others focus on cooperation and teamwork. Think about what kind of environment would best suit your child's personality and interests.
5. Location, Location, Location: Consider how far you're comfortable sending your child from home. Some families opt for camps close by, while others embrace the opportunity for their kiddos to explore new places and make friends from different backgrounds.
Phew, that's a lot to think about, right? But trust me, putting in the effort to find the perfect camp is oh-so worth it in the end. Seeing the sheer joy and excitement on your child's face as they regale you with tales of campfire sing-alongs, cabin adventures, and new friendships.
So go ahead, mama, take a deep breath and send your kiddo off on the summer camp adventure of a lifetime. Who knows? They just might come back a little taller, a little wiser, and with a whole lot of unforgettable memories tucked away in their heart.
Happy camping!
